ASPETAR / KHALIFA ORTHOPEDIC & SPORTS MEDICINE HOSPITAL

DOHA, QATAR

In preparation for the 2006 Asian Games, hosted in Doha, Qatar, Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thana, special envoy to HH Emir Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani set out to provide Qatar’s national athletes with international-standard orthopedic care and sports injury prevention and treatment.  In this, an international design competition was created to develop a one-of-a-kind medical facility that would support an ambitious program in sports medicine, and also become a recognized leader in this area of healthcare for the UAE and this region.

Cultural respect and regional context help guide the design in areas like gender separation and climate response, while the blending of healthcare practices and design innovation combined to find the right balance of function and aesthetic.  Large volumes and overhangs buffered the elements, and a comprehensive program fulfilled the mission in providing an international standard of services in orthopedic and sports medicine.
