HEALTHCARE

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR COMMUNITY HOSPITAL

LOS ANGELES, CA USA

Located between the two complex Los Angeles neighborhoods of Compton and Watts, the MLK/Drew Medical Center had a history of mismanagement and an even worse perception of poor service within its communities.  This project came about as a commitment to provide a level of healthcare and quality services that this neighborhood deserved.

The design immediately determined to not try and retain anything from the old hospital and its multiple buildings, but rather to start from scratch and build something extraordinary for this community.  In this, we were able to provide a clean slate for logistics and the high level of healthcare services expected in a hospital today.  Residents would no longer have any image of the past, but would now see a modern facility with a patient care model that they deserve.
